A Quick Look at the Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Red Raiders bring of the Big 12 Conference's top passing attack to Mountaineer Field

The West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1) host the Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-2) Saturday afternoon with kickoff set for 3:30 EST and streaming on ESPN+.

The Red Raiders finished the 2022 season on a four-game winning streak, capped off with a 42-25 win over Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl. The momentum prompted the media to pick Texas Tech to finish fourth in the Big 12 Conference but have gotten off to a slow and dropped their first two games of the season, losing at Wyoming in the opener and their home-opener to then no. 13 Oregon before capturing their first win of the season against Tarleton State last week.

Quarterback Tyler Shough leads the Big 12 in passing yards, averaging 310 yards per game with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. Preseason All-Big 12 selection Jerand Bradley leads the team in receptions (17) and receiving yards (211) while Jordan Brown is second on the team with 124 yards on eight receptions and Miles Price is second on the team in receptions with 12 for 118 yards and team-leading three touchdowns.

Tahj Brooks leads the team in rushing with 263 yards in 36 carries (7.3 ypc) and Cam’Ron Valdez, the former four-star prospect, is expected to return to the lineup after suffering an injury early in the season-opener.

Defensively, Linebacker Jason Pierre has registered a team-high 25 tackles while linebacker Myles Cole leads the team with two sacks. Redshirt freshman Ben Roberts was placed into starting role in week versus Oregon and delivered in first career start with 12 tackles, including 1.5 TFLs, 0.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble.

The defensive front is led by Jaylon Hutchings and Tony Bradford Jr. leads the group. Hutchings leads the unit with 10 tackles and a sack. The Red Raiders are also expecting some depth with the possible return of edge rusher Joseph Adedire.

San Diego State transfer cornerback C.J. Baskerville and safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson have combined for four pass deflection while corner Malik Dunlap has a team-best two interceptions.

The series between West Virginia is knotted at six with the Red Raiders coming into the contest with a four-game winning streak over the Mountaineers.
