No love for the Mountaineers in 2023.

DraftKings Gives West Virginia a Very Low Win Total for 2023 /

Expectations are low in Morgantown as Neal Brown enters his fifth season as the head football coach. The program has had just one winning season during his tenure and that came in 2020 - a COVID-shortened schedule.

Recently, DraftKings Sportsbook released the 2023 season win totals for every team and West Virginia's total opens at 4.5 wins.

Here is the 2023 schedule:

Sept. 2 @ Penn State

Sept. 9 Duquesne

Sept. 16 Pitt

Sept. 23 Texas Tech

Sept. 30 @TCU

Oct. 12 @ Houston

Oct. 21 Oklahoma State

Oct. 28 @UCF

Nov. 4 BYU

Nov. 11 @ Oklahoma

Nov. 18 Cincinnati

Nov. 25 @ Baylor

Is the 4.5-win total too high? Too low? Or just right?

My way-too-early season prediction is 5-7, so in theory, it's a tad low but it's essentially in the right spot. Aside from a Week 2 matchup with Duquesne, there are no guaranteed wins on the schedule. Kansas isn't featured on the slate this year, but that may actually be a good thing as the Jayhawks finally appear to be on the come-up.

With a first-year quarterback and your top four receivers from 2022 out of the program, there is a clear concern about the passing game. Defensively, the Mountaineers are going to be extremely young up front and still have some depth issues in the secondary. Getting over 4.5 wins isn't a surefire thing for WVU this fall.
