The West Virginia University Mountaineers open the season at home against the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday.

Penn State and West Virginia met for the first time in 31 years in the 2023 season opener. The Nittany Lions pulled away in the second half with a 38-15 victory.

Quarterback Drew Allar threw a season-high 325 yards and three touchdowns while running back Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allan combined for 121 rushing yards and a touchdown.

WVU Game Notes

- The 2024 season marks West Virginia’s 132nd season of football. The Mountaineers are the 15th winningest program in college football.

- The 2024 year marks the 45th season of competition for West Virginia at Milan Puskar Stadium. WVU has a 197-76-4 (.718) all-time mark at the facility, which opened in 1980.

- WVU is one of four Power Four schools to open its fourth straight season against a Power Four opponent (Maryland - 2021, Pitt - 2022, Penn State - 2023, Penn State - 2024) and the only Power Four school to play 11 Power Four schools for four straight years.

- WVU is 4-1 in games played on Aug. 31, including 3-1 at home. The last time WVU played on that date was in 2019 vs. JMU (W 20-13).

- West Virginia is 156-162-12 against schools from the state of Pennsylvania, including 73-123-5 against Power Four schools.

- The Penn State series is West Virginia’s third longest-played rivalry, with the 2024 game being the 61st meeting between the two schools. WVU’s longest series are against Pitt (106), Syracuse (60), Penn State (60), Virginia Tech (54) and Maryland (53).

- No. 8/9 Penn State enters the 2024 opener as the highest ranked opponent the Mountaineers have faced in a home season opener since No. 1 Ohio State on Sept. 5, 1998. (No. 23 Wisconsin in 2003).

- West Virginia is 91-36-4 all-time in season openers (17-7 since 2000/31-12-1 since 1980).

- In home openers, West Virginia is 102-21-6, including winning 19 of the last 20. WVU is 39-5-1 in home openers since 1980, including 22-2 since 2000.

- WVU is 38-16 in nonconference games since 2010, including 26-1 at home. The Mountaineers are 73- 31 since 2000, including 50-7 at home.

- On West Virginia's roster, the Mountaineers have 45 players who have played in 20 or more games, including 23 on defense and 22 on offense.

- West Virginia returns 94.2% of its run production from a year ago, led by running backs Jahiem White (842) and CJ Donaldson Jr. (798) and quarterback Garrett Greene (772). WVU led Power Five in rushing average (228.9) and was the only school in the Big 12 to finish with more than 2,000 yards rushing (2,211).

- Greene tied for first among quarterbacks in Power Five in rushing touchdowns (13) and No. 16 among for yards per attempt (8.69).

- White set the single-season school record (at least 100 carries) for most yards per carry (7.7) in 2023. He was named a freshman All-American by The Athletic and On3.

- Senior offensive lineman Wyatt Milum was named a preseason All-America second team selection by Athlon Sports, Lindys and Walter Camp and third team by Phil Steele.

- WVU was No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 2 among Power Five schools for fewest sacks allowed (10).
