Hudson Clement Graded as Top Five Freshman Receiver in Power Five

The former walk-on put in work this past season for the Mountaineers.

At the start of the 2023 season, if someone told you a walk-on would be West Virginia's second-leading receiving and tied for the team lead in touchdown receptions, you'd probably laugh it off and not take said person very seriously.

Martinsburg native Hudson Clement did exactly that and earned himself not only a scholarship following his breakout performance against Duquesne, but became a key fixture in the Mountaineer offense.

Clement received a grade of 78.3 by Pro Football focus - the fifth-highest of all Power Five freshman receivers.

The reason it's not concerning that the former walk-on finished with 22 receptions for 480 yards and four touchdowns is because the overall health of the room is in pretty good shape. Senior Devin Carter had a strong one year with the team while tight end Kole Taylor, another former walk-on Preston Fox, and a pair of true freshmen (Traylon Ray, Rodney Gallagher III) provided contributions to the passing game.

That's what makes what Clement did in 2023 even more special. He truly balled out and not because they desperately needed him to. He forced the coaching staff's hand and was inserted in big moments throughout the season such as being on the receiving end for the go-ahead score against Houston and pulling down two big first down catches on the game-winning drive against Baylor.

Come next season, Clement will be at the top of the opposition's scouting report.
