Hudson Clement is Just Getting Started: 'He's Going to Play'
Last week, West Virginia wide receiver Devin Carter was unable to play due to being stepped on at practice earlier in the week. He tried to give it a go, but head coach Neal Brown told him after watching pregame warmups that he didn't want to risk it because he was unable to run full speed, telling Carter he would be sitting.
Literally minutes before kickoff, then redshirt freshman walk-on Hudson Clement was told that he would make his first career start. And boy, oh boy, he made the most of his opportunity. Not only did Clement make plays, but he became just the third receiver in program history to record 175 or more yards and three touchdowns in a single game, joining legends Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey. That's elite company.
Following the game, Clement was awarded a scholarship and as head coach Neal Brown noted, it was going to happen at some point. But after that game, why wait? Now the question that is on everyone's mind is will Clement be a factor in the offensive gameplan moving forward? Or was last week just a factor of playing a lesser opponent in Duquesne?
"He's going to play. He's productive," stated Brown earlier this week. "Both those outside guys are pretty much interchangeable and so, Devin will play and Hudson, he put up big numbers so he's going to continue to play. We may flip him over and play him more at X and then when Devin comes back, he plays Z."
