Projected 2023 WVU Football Spring Depth Chart - Offense

What WVU's offense could look like this spring.

QB: Garrett Greene OR Nicco Marchiol, Sean Boyle

No, a starting quarterback has not been named yet. And there is a chance this thing spills over into fall camp. However, if Greene or Marchiol clearly separate themselves during the spring, don't be surprised to see Neal Brown name that guy QB1.

RB: C.J. Donaldson, Tony Mathis Jr., Justin Johnson Jr., Jaylen Anderson

The running back room is loaded with talent. Each of these four has the ability to be a Power Five starter and there are two more on the way - Jahiem White and DJ Oliver. They will rotate, but Donaldson is likely RB1.

WR (X): Devin Carter, Traylon Ray

Carter, the NC State transfer, will help replace the production of Bryce Ford-Wheaton with the future, Traylon Ray, learning behind him. He's a big-time downfield threat, averaging 16.2 yards per catch for his career. Probably the best home run option they've had since George Campbell.

WR (Y): Ja'Shaun Poke, Preston Fox

Poke is lightning-fast and will also make his mark on special teams. He'll factor in some on offense but there will be some shuffling among the receivers, so I don't expect him to remain as the starter. Maybe Gallagher slides in here.

WR (Z): Cortez Braham, Jeremiah Aaron, Jarel Williams

Braham played as Ford-Wheaton's backup at the X last year, but we move him over to the Z to get him on the field. A strong-handed receiver that showed some flashes toward the end of the year last season.

WR (H): Jeremiah Aaron, Rodney Gallagher, Graeson Malashevich

WVU lost Reese Smith to the portal, but the position is upgraded with Aaron moving into a starting role and the talented true freshman, Gallagher, sitting right behind him. Both can play the Y and Gallagher could even move out as the Z on occasion too.

TE: Kole Taylor, Treylan Davis, Victor Wikström, Will Dixon, TJ Johnson

It's a talented room, but unproven. Taylor primarily served as a blocking tight end last year at LSU, so he'll serve a similar role as Brian Polendey did last year, except he is more of a threat as a pass-catcher. Johnson is the one to watch here. They will start him at tight end but could end up moving him out to receiver. Big, twitchy, athletic, rangy receiver that WVU hasn't had at tight end under Neal Brown.

LT: Wyatt Milum, Nick Malone, Johnny Williams IV

At some point, I think we'll see Williams move into the backup role. He's the future at left tackle.

LG: Tomas Rimac, Nick Malone, Maurice Hamilton

Rimac started the final five games of the season and looked rather impressive. I don't see Hamilton being ready to challenge him for the job this early in his career. However, Hamilton will be a multi-year starter before it's all said and done.

C: Zach Frazier, Landen Livingston

Nothing surprising here. Livingston backs up the All-American.

RG: Doug Nester, Sullivan Weidman

Nester chose to come back for one more season and because of it, the Mountaineers won't have to dip in the portal for a band-aid fix or throw a young kid into the fire who may not be ready for a starting role.

RT: Ja'Quay Hubbard, Brandon Yates, Charlie Katarincic

Arguably the deepest position along the offensive line, but it's also the biggest question mark. Hubbard and Yates have each started a number of games, so it'll be interesting to see how that battle shakes out and if Katarincic can work his way into the conversation.
