The Decision is In: Neal Brown Has Chosen His Starting QB

The quarterback battle in Morgantown is over.

West Virginia head football coach Neal Brown stayed true to his word. He wanted to get through two scrimmages before making a decision on who will start at quarterback when the team opens up the season at Penn State.

Monday afternoon, he told the media that the position battle has been settled, but he isn't willing to tip his hand and let Penn State know who to prepare for.

"I know who we're going to play. I know who's going to start. I don't know if we'll share that or not. But yeah, that's been decided."

"It kind of verified what had been happening throughout camp," Brown said when asked if he knew who the starter was immediately after the second scrimmage. "Both guys have gotten better. But one of them has performed at a higher level and we're going to continue to push them. We can play both of them in the game. I feel comfortable with both of them. It's just been clear who's ahead at this point."

Brown has reported throughout most of camp that redshirt freshman Nicco Marchiol has had "really high highs and really low lows" while also mentioning that Garrett Greene has been solid for the most part. Decision-making and accuracy were the determining factors in the battle for the job, so that ought to give you a pretty good idea as to who won the competition.

Despite the job being won, Brown says he will consider playing both quarterbacks against Penn State. That's something he and the staff will decide on when they go to put in their gameplan for next week.

"They know [who the starter is]," stated Brown. "We haven't done anything real formal with it, but they have a pretty good understanding. Here's the thing, we've got two really good quarterbacks. Feel good about both of them. One of them's a little bit further ahead and that's kind of where it is. I don't know if it really helps us to share a whole lot."
