Updated Duke's Mayo Bowl Odds Following Drake Maye's Decision
North Carolina starting quarterback Drake Maye announced Monday evening that he is skipping the Duke's Mayo Bowl against West Virginia to begin preparation for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Maye is projected to be the No. 2 overall pick by most around the NFL, but some believe he has a legitimate shot to go first overall. Heading into the 2023 season, Maye was a favorite for the Heisman Trophy but thanks to a mid-season collapse that saw the Tar Heels four of its last six games, he became an afterthought for the award.
Maye finished the season throwing for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns to nine interceptions while completing 63% of his pass attempts. He added another 449 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
West Virginia opened as 3.5-point favorites for the bowl game, most likely because the oddsmakers knew that Maye sitting out would be a strong possibility. Had he played in the game, Carolina would more than likely be favored. Minutes before the news officially dropped, sportsbooks adjusted their respective lines to West Virginia -5.5, hinting at Maye's eventual decision.
At SI Sportsbook, West Virginia remains a 5.5-point favorite with the over/under currently at 55.5
