West Virginia Welcomes Duquesne for Home-Opener

The Mountaineers take on an old foe in the season-opener

Morgantown, WV - The West Virginia Mountaineers (0-1) host the Duquesne Dukes (1-0) in the season home-opener Saturday evening with kickoff set for six o’clock and streaming on ESPN+.

Duquesne is 1-6 all-time versus FBS programs with the lone win coming against Ohio in 2021.  

The Dukes opened the season with a 49-7 victory over Edinboro. The Dukes defense propelled a 21-0 first quarter lead, forcing four of Edinboro’s five turnovers in the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore cornerback Ayden Garnes set the tone with a pick-six on the second play of the game.

Junior quarterback Darius Perrantes finished the day 7-for-13 for 135 yards, two passing touchdowns, and one rushing TD all in one half of action while Daryll Powel Jr brought in three receptions for 57 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Missouri transfer Taj Butts rushed for a game-high 104 yards on 10 carries.

West Virginia opened its season on the road with a 38-15 loss.at No. 7 Penn State.

The Mountaineers produced 148 rushing yards against one of the best defenses in the country last week, highlighted by the return of sophomore CJ Donaldson’s 81 yards and a touchdown.

Redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Greene will look to get into a rhythm with receivers Cortez Braham and Devin Carter after throwing for 162 yards through the air versus the Nittany Lions.

Defensively, the Mountaineers allowed 332 passing yards while giving up 146 yards on the ground a week ago. However, the defensive line proved its depth and potential against a stacked PSU front, and middle linebacker Lee Kpogba’s 13 tackles on the night propelled him to All-Big 12 first team consideration. 

West Virgina leads the all-time series 4-3-2. The last meeting came in 1935 with Duquesne taking the matchup 19-0 in Morgantown.
