WVU Football Enters March Madness Mode

Neal Brown introduces a new way of looking at the "one game at a time" approach.

Did you have West Virginia being a true player in the Big 12 title race this fall? I know I didn't. Through the first few weeks of conference play, the Mountaineers look like they have a chance as they enter Week 6 all alone in second place trailing only Oklahoma, who has played one more game and is 3-0.

There's still a ton of football left to be played, meaning the Mountaineers can drop out of the Big 12 picture as quickly as they entered it. Thursday night's game at Houston will be a good barometer for where this team is.

Why?

Well, the Cougars are statistically one of the worst teams in the league and have lost their two conference affairs by an average of 23.5 points. Winning on the road is tough. Winning on the road against a conference opponent is harder. Winning on the road against a conference opponent who is on the ropes? Even more challenging.

No one game comes easy in the Big 12 and West Virginia fans have learned that the hard way over the last decade or so. It sounds simple and obvious, but these are the types of games you absolutely have to win if you want a shot at being in the conversation late in November.

All week long, the storyline around this game will be about Dana Holgorsen facing his former team. But for the Mountaineers it's about having that March Madness mentality.

"For me, the way I look at it is we're 2-0 in the conference. I think that's the most important thing. We don't talk about 4-1 much. We just talk about 2-0," said head coach Neal Brown. "And the way I talk about it with our team is it's like you're in the NCAA basketball tournament. Every game is survive and advance. For us, it's about getting better and this happens to be our Big 12 game this week, so let's figure out a way to get to 3-0."
