October 12th, 2023. West Virginia at Houston. It's Dana Holgorsen vs. the school that gave him a polite nudge out the door.

WVU may not have fired Holgorsen following the 2018 season but the writing was on the wall. Both he and the university knew it was time to part ways. Still, though, his exit is something he won't forget about.

But Dana Holgorsen isn't the only Houston Cougar who will be facing the school and state he used to represent. After Monday's decision by running back Tony Mathis Jr. to transfer to Houston, that makes four former Mountaineers who will suit up against WVU this fall.

Who are the other three?

WR Sam Brown

Sam Brown was expected to be a big piece of West Virginia's future when he first arrived in 2020. Unfortunately, things didn't work out and he rarely saw the field which prompted his transfer to UH. This past season, Brown hauled in 41 receptions for 471 yards and four touchdowns for the Cougars and is likely to be WR1 in 2023.

TE Mike O'Laughlin

O'Laughlin suffered a number of knee injuries throughout his time at WVU and was never able to develop into one of the best tight ends in the Big 12 like Neal Brown believed he would because of it. He considered retiring from the game but ended up hopping in the portal and landing at Houston for his final year of college ball, reuniting with Holgorsen.

DB Noah Guzman

Guzman was a class of '19 recruit but he was recruited by Neal Brown as a summer addition to the roster. In two years with WVU, Guzman notched 33 tackles. This past season at UH, he only totaled five tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 13 games.
