Giants Commit Serious Money to UDFA WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton

New York believes the former Mountaineer can push for a roster spot.

It's been several days, yet I'm still shocked that West Virginia wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft.

No, he may not have had the numbers that some of the top receivers in this class had but he was, however, more productive and offers more athleticism than some of the receivers taken on days two and three of the draft.

Fortunately for Bryce, he didn't have to wait all that long before finding a home in the NFL. Shortly after the draft, the New York Giants agreed to terms on a deal and it's a rich one for an undrafted player.

According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Ford-Wheaton signed for $236k in guaranteed money in addition to a $30k signing bonus. A full-season salary on the practice squad in the NFL is $216k, so clearly the Giants believe in Ford-Wheaton's ability to push for a spot on the 53-man roster.

NFL teams typically carry five to six receivers on their active roster. Darius Slayton, Parris Campbell, Isaiah Hodgins, Jaylin Hyatt, Sterling Shepard, and Wan'Dale Robinson are locks. The good news is the Giants began the season last year carrying seven wide receivers, including another former Mountaineer, David Sills.

Brian Daboll likes his quarterback to spread the ball around, so having depth at receiver is extremely important in the Giants' offense. Come August, it could very well end up being Sills vs. Ford-Wheaton for that final spot in the receiver room.
