Jevon Carter Earns First NBA Start
Monday evening the Houston Rockets beat the Memphis Grizzlies handily by a score of 112-94.
The Grizzlies season has not been a pretty one, they are just 19-24 on the year and 14th in the Western Conference.
However, for West Virginia fans Monday’s game was one to be celebrated. It was a moment in Mountaineer history that will be remembered for a long time. It was Jevon Carter’s first start in an NBA game.
Memphis has been trying to become a lock-down defensive team in the high scoring pace of play that is today’s NBA. So when West Virginia native and Memphis GM Chris Wallace selected Jevon Carter early in the second round of last years draft it didn’t surprise many.
What may be surprising is how fast Carter has managed to rise up through the organization. For most of the first part of the season Carter was assigned to the Grizzlies’ G-Leauge team the Hustle. He dominated in the league with impressive Offensive and Defensive performances.
Throughout the season Jevon was pulled up as a bench player with Memphis and he played well enough to impress head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. Carter got the nod for the start Monday in an attempt to shut down the second best offense in the NBA.
Carter finished with 15 minutes, 8 points, going 50% from three, a rebound and a pair of assists. He is the first Mountaineer to start in an NBA game since Devin Ebanks in the 2012-2013 season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Grizzlies are back in action on Wednesday night when they host the Greek Freak and the high-flying Milwaukee Bucks.
