Marty Strey's Leadership and Work Ethic

On being asked about co-captain Marty Strey, Coach Fickell expressed high regard for Strey's positivity and leadership skills. "Marty just does a great job. I mean there's nobody more positive and more upbeat than Marty," Fickell remarked. He acknowledged that while Strey might not play extensively on defense, his role in the team transcends the field. His influence became apparent when he emerged as a captain, a clear indicator of the respect he commands among his peers. Fickell noted that Strey's consistent presence as a leader and motivator has been pivotal, "You... go to vote for captains and you see the respect that he has amongst his entire team.

And so not that that all of a sudden changed my opinion of Marty, but through the season, given me an opportunity to understand, know him a little bit better, and, see his consistency that he has been for us, not just as a player. Because, you know, he only has a certain role, which is important, but his consistency as a leader, his consistency as a guy that's an example and a motivator."

Vinny Anthony's Increased Playtime

Coach Fickell also discussed the recent increase in playing time for Vinny Anthony. He attributed Anthony's increased opportunities to the evolving situations and the player's performance in recent weeks. "Last week, the week before ... all of a sudden he's the kick returner. He's the punt returner. He makes some plays... you see the aggressiveness, you see ... the spark that he provided a little bit a couple weeks ago."  Fickell further explained, "That's how playing time starts to happen. It's not everybody's granted the opportunity because they go to practice because they work hard in practice. No, I mean, some guys are granted, they have some opportunities because of misfortunes that happened. And then others are granted because all of a sudden you see them earn the opportunities and there's earned their growth of opportunities. And he's one that I like to say has done it the old-fashioned way. That all of a sudden he had some opportunities and went in there and made some really, really good plays and provided some spark and we'll continue to see more." 

Christian Alliegro's Emerging Role

Finally, discussing Christian Alliegro, Fickell highlighted his recent contributions, especially in third-down situations. Alliegro, described as having a growing role in the team, was commended for his versatility and impact. "He's a guy that's going to continue to get more and more. ... Last week, did a great job on special teams, made a couple of tackles on the kickoff, obviously he had a sack.," Fickell stated, pointing out Alliegro's effective play in special teams. Christian Alliegro's increasing involvement is a testament to the team's belief in nurturing young talent. Fickell concluded, "Christian is probably one of those guys that for sure, is going to see a lot more."
