Apex Legends Fans Outraged by Final Fantasy 7 Event Price Tag
Apex Legends x Final Fantasy 7 Crossover Event Lootboxes Cost $16 each, Most Expensive Cosmetics, $360 One-Winged Angel Deathbox
- There are 36 cosmetics in total players have to unlock the One-Winged Angel Deathbox in Apex Legends.
- The Final Fantasy 7 specific loot boxes cost 1,600 Apex Coins each, or $16. There are a few ways to get some of them cheaper.
- This marks an increase in price per box and the number of cosmetics players must purchase to get an heirloom mythic rarity item.
The Final Fantasy 7 x Apex Legends crossover event is the first major IP event for the battler-royale following the Post Malone event late last year. While some fans have been unhappy with certain cosmetic designs, the random has mostly been very excited about this event. That all changed this weekend with the release of a new trailer that revealed what players could expect in terms of pricing for the event.
Most Expensive Event in Apex History
Most collection events in Apex Legends require players to unlock 24 cosmetics and in return, they get a mythic rarity item in the form of an heirloom weapon. These weapons are specific to a single legend and have no impact on gameplay beyond being cosmetic. The 24 cosmetics can all be unlocked via loot boxes, with some being included in bundles.
These heirlooms cost $159 to unlock all 24 cosmetics, though players can offset that cost by crafting some of the cosmetics.
To get the Buster Sword R universal heirloom, which can be equipped by any Legend in the game, as well as a first-off-its-kinda One-Winged Angel Deathbox cosmetic, players will need to collect 36 event cosmetics that are priced at $16 per box according to the latest trailer.
$360 One-Winged Angel Deathbox & Heirloom
There will be ways in the event to unlock some loot boxes without paying such an expensive price. For example, a few of them can be earned by doing daily challenges in the game. There could also be one or two in the free-reward tracker.
In the trailer, it also looks as though there may be a limited-time ‘sale’ window. The button shows that players can purchase 4 packs for 4,000 Apex Coins normally, but that is crossed out with 1,600 behind it. The exchange rate of Apex Coins to USD is 100 coins for every $1.
In past collection events, the packs by themselves cost $7 and players can choose to buy specific cosmetics if they wish, avoiding the cruel and random fate of the RNG.
Limited-Time Buster Sword Heirloom
The FOMO of this event is going to put even more pressure on players who have that fear of missing out. Mythic rarity heirlooms are the most highly sought-after cosmetic in the game, but in normal collection events, you can wait til afterward and purchase the heirloom in the mythic item tab for 150 heirloom shards. These drop at a rate of 1 in 500 loot boxes.
But for the Buster Sword, if players do not unlock it during the Apex Legends x Final Fantasy 7 event, then it is gone forever. To unlock it, players have a random chance of obtaining it when they open an event-specific pack.
Some players could get lucky enough to get it in just one pack, but the chances of that happening are less than 1%. This means the majority of players will likely get it as their 36th pack.
Apex Legends Players Are Fed Up
After a year of ups and downs for Apex Legends, recolored events, and increasingly pricey cosmetics, the players of Respawns battle royale are understandably frustrated. The player count has been slowly dwindling season over season due to unrest over the state of the current ranked system.
In addition, competing battle royale Fortnite has seen a spike thanks to their return to the OG map and the LEGO Fortnite addition. If the prices in this Final Fantasy 7 x Apex Legends event continue down such a predatory path, it could push some fans of Apex Legends event further away.
