When Is LoL Season 14?

The release date for Season 14 is January 9, 2024. It has been pushed back a little from the previous release date since Season 13’s ranked season is being extended to January 3, 2024.

League of Legends Season 14 New Format

In Season 14, the structure of the ranked year will change dramatically. Right now there is just a single season per year but going into Season 14, the ranked year will have three splits.

  • Split 1: January 9 - May 2024
  • Split 2: May - September 2024
  • Split 3: September - January 2024

The purpose of this big change is to allow players to join competitive ranked play more frequently. Now players only have to wait four months instead of an entire season if they opt out of a particular season.

New MMR System in 2024

Riot Games has also confirmed that competitive LoL will be moving to a new ranked MMR system in 2024 after over a decade. This largely includes changing to Microsoft’s TrueSkill 2 system.

On Reddit, Design Director August Dean “Iksar” Ayala explained that developers will be using a Riot-made MMR system at the start of the 2024 season but that the eventual switch to TrueSkill 2 is permanent.

The new ranked MMR system in the upcoming season will initially make it easier for new accounts to be placed more accurately on the ranked ladder. From there, TrueSkill 2 is designed to be “more in-depth” when it comes to rating players’ skills, making their ongoing placement more accurate as they grind.

TrueSkill 2 doesn’t just use wins and losses like most MMR systems. The new system will instead take other things into account, including your experience, in-game behavior, kill count, and if you’ve left games or quit.

It’s currently unclear when this new system will be implemented but it will be sometime during the 2024 season.

Victorious Skins in 2024

To give competitive players even more urgency to join the Season 14 ranked season, Riot Games has introduced Victorious skins along with the usual ranked rewards. You can earn up to three Victorious skins per year — one for each split. To get these prestigious rewards, you need to reach Gold or higher.
