Insomniac’s Spider-Man Video Games are widely known as some of the best gaming experiences ever made. From the original Spider-Man that was released in 2018, to the sequel that dropped in October 2023, fans have loved swinging around New York and living out their Spider-Man fantasy.

However, following a data breach on Insomniac back in December 2023, we discovered that a new title was in the works, Spider-Man: The Great Web. Following the breach, all kinds of information was revealed to the public, including in-game images, and most recently a full trailer for the game.

Unfortunately, the title was cancelled, and it’s unlikely that we’ll see this title brought back into development. The trailer can be found online, and some details of the game sounded amazing, so many fans are disappointed.

What was Spider-Man: The Great Web?

The trailer for this game shows co-op gameplay that features up to five players in one game at a time. Not only could players control Spider-Man, but there are also characters for Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, and even Venom.

The plot of the title surrounds Scarlet Witch opening up the multiverse. This results in a number of threats entering the world, most notably the Sinister Six. Due to this, all Spider-Man characters from every world have come together to take down the threat, similar to the story of the Into the Spider-Verse movie. However, this Insomniac title remains in the normal Spider-Man style.

Spider-Man: The Great Web was also expected to be a live service title, and to receive regular updates for years to come. Live service titles are becoming more popular each and every year, and Sony’s games model is definitely heading in that direction. Players of both Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 have always wanted a multiplayer, co-op experience, and this game could’ve been just that.

While this trailer only reveals the very surface level of what Spider-Man: The Great Web was going to be, fans are disappointed that it was cancelled. Perhaps it would’ve been the greatest superhero video game of all time, or the multiplayer experience could’ve died extremely quickly. We’ll never know, but it’s fun to look at what could’ve been, and what Insomniac were working on.
