Pokémon Community Shocked by New Championship Point Requirements
Along with the complete regional schedule, Pokémon has also announced the prizing and its new championship point requirements.
Pokémon regionals are important events in the competitive season, with TCG, VCG, and GO players hoping to get enough points by placing high in regionals across the world in an attempt to qualify for the World Championship. But some Pokémon players are frustrated with the new championship point requirements that were announced today.
The TCG qualifications have gone up for the 2024 season. Masters from North America will now need to earn 600 Championship Points across regionals and other tournaments to qualify for Worlds. It was previously 350 for TCG players in North America.
It’s nothing new for North American players to need more CP than other regions. There are more regionals in North America than in every other region, meaning more opportunities to get points at regionals and smaller events, like League Cups.
But the jump from 350 to 600 had the TCG community shook. Players responded with frustration over the new CP requirements, with some even claiming they wouldn’t bother trying to qualify. Others pointed out that people who did try to qualify would have to spend a lot of money on traveling so they could grind as many regionals as possible.
2024 Pokémon TCG Championship Points
Here is the breakdown of how players can earn CP in 2024.
- League Challenge — 15 CP for winning, 8-12 CP for top 8
- League Cup — 50 CP for winning, 25-40 CP for top 8
- Regional — 200 CP for winning, 20-160 CP for top cut (around 250)
- International Championships — 500 CP for winning, 50-400 CP for top cut (around 500)
As you can see, it’s definitely going to be a challenge to get 600 CP this season. Even the top players realistically only win two regionals in a season, if that. There will be a lot more traveling required this year than ever before for players who are taking a Worlds invite seriously.
2024 Pokemon VGC Championship Points
VGC players that are looking to qualify for Worlds will need 500 CP. Here’s how they can earn points this season:
- Premier Challenge — 30 CP for winning, 8-16 CP for top 8
- Midesason Showdown — 50 CP for winning, 25-40 CP for top 8
- Global Challenge — 160 CP for winning, 80-130 CP for top 8
- Regional — 200 CP for winning, 20-160 CP for top cut (around 250)
- International Championships — 500 CP for winning, 50-400 CP for top cut (around 500)

- Regional — 200 CP for winning, 20-160 CP for top cut (around 250)
