Rory McIlroy currently has a six-shot lead heading into the final round of the British Open. The win would net McIlroy $1.2 million, along with a $341,730 payout for his father. That's because in 2004, Rory's dad, Gerry, bet $683 that his son would win the Open before the age of 26 (McIlroy is now 25). The news was first reported by the BBC's Andrew Cotter:
So just to confirm - 10 yrs ago Gerry McIlroy & three friends put £400 at 500-1 on 15 year-old Rory to win The Open before he turned 26.

Yes, it was by the age of 25. So I asked the man himself. This year still counts.

That's a pretty outstanding bet, Gerry. Hopefully your son can win you some extra loot at Royal Liverpool on Sunday.
