Thursday's A.M. Hot Clicks: Mark McGwire-Jose Canseco Feud Lives
Bash Brothers Reunion? Not Quite
If you're looking for a happy ending to the Mark McGwire-Jose Canseco story, it's not happening. The former teammates have been at odds since Canseco accused McGwire of using PEDs in his 2005 book. Canseco has since admitted regret over the book and has tried to make amends with McGwire, even wearing a "Sorry for everything, Mark" t-shirt to a 2012 Cardinals game. But the damage has been done. In a recent interview with ESPN Los Angeles, McGwire coldly stated, "It's too late. I don't care to ever speak to him again. What he did was wrong ... I can care less what he does." Canseco heard about these comments and sent a string of sad apology tweets to his former teammate last night before challenging him to a home run derby.
Rough Night For Grounds Crew
A severe lightning and rain storm swept through The Bronx during the fifth inning of last night's Yankees-Rangers game and the grounds crew was called into action. That's where the trouble began. Big League Stew has video and photos of the incident, but the skinny is that it took 14 minutes to cover the infield and by that point, both teams decided it best to cancel the game. The Yankees won 2-1 in five almost complete innings. Nobody was singing Y-M-C-A after this debacle.
Minnesota Vikings vs. Minnesota Audubon Society
The Vikings are set to open their new stadium in 2016 and one group isn't excited about the facility's state-of-the-art glass exterior. The Minnesota Audubon Society wants the team to spend an extra $1.1 million to upgrade to bird-safe glass, but the team can't afford it. According to the society, an estimated 988 million birds die annually by inadvertently flying into buildings. State guidelines require the use of this special glass for projects financed by the state, but the team refuses to budge, arguing that those laws went into effect after construction had begun.
Lovely Lady of the Day
I received a bunch of great LLOD suggestions yesterday, so thanks to everyone who sent them in. Two people (Dan and RJDS) requested I profile Shannon Ihrke, the Loop Rock Girl for 97.9 in Chicago and a former Marine. I think that is a fine choice (click here for full-size gallery).
Joel Embiid-Rihanna Update
If you thought Joel Embiid was just going to hit on Rihanna once and then move on to the next victim, you're sadly mistaken. The Sixers rookie was at it again on Wednesday, tweeting out a photo of the pop star wearing Embiid's No. 11 Sixers jersey (photoshopped, I should add).
Two Saints. One Bed.
NFL training camps open this week and I already have my favorite story.Andy Tanner and Austin Johnson, who are both battling to make the Saints, are sharing a room together that has only one bed. Unfortunately for Johnson, he can't share it with his girlfriend, Susie Leica.
From the SI Vault
Ten years ago today, benches emptied during a tense Red Sox-Yankees game, highlighted by this skirmish along the first base line between Alex Rodriguez and Jason Varitek. The brawl was set off when Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo hit A-Rod with a pitch and the third baseman stared at Arroyo on his way to first. Varitek intervened and the brawl began. Boston would get the last laugh in the playoffs when it came back from an 0-3 deficit to beat the Yankees on the way to its first World Series since 1918. Barry Larkin, Mic'd Up
Barry Bonds turns 50 today and I tried to find a funny, old video to celebrate. Instead I stumbled upon this footage of Barry Larkin mic'd up at the 1993 All-Star game talking to Bonds, Michael Jordan, Tony Gwynn and others.
