Cleveland Indians right fielder David Murphy rounded third base Tuesday night after he saw a baseball lying dormant in right field and assumed it had gotten away from the Reds' defense. The only problem was that it wasn't the game ball.
Indians catcher Yan Gomes had just slashed a ball to right field and on Reds outfielder Jay Bruce's ensuing throw to the infield, a second ball flew onto the field from the direction of the Reds bullpen. Murphy was confused by the errant ball and was subsequently punched out while trying to dive back into third base once he had realized his error.
The Indians ended up losing, 9-2, and took to Twitter to voice their annoyance.
