ABC has picked up the rights to a comedy series based on the life of Robbie Rogers, a defender for the LA Galaxy who became the first openly gay player to compete in a top-tier North American sports league.

The series, called Men In Shorts, won't be a retelling of Rogers' story but he will be a producer. No casting decisions or air dates have been released.

Rogers came out in February 2013 while simultaneously announcing his retirement, but came out of retirement in May to sign with the Galaxy. On May 26, 2013, he became the first openly gay player to compete in a major American sports league.

Rogers also has a book coming out in November, titled Coming Out To Play.
