The president of Mauritania, a troubled desert nation in Western Africa, is accused of ordering a championship match to end in a penalty shootout almost 30 minutes early because he was upset with the pace of the game. Saturday’s game between FC Tevragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar in Mauritania’s Ligue 1 was tied 1–1 when the ref ordered the players to stop. The country’s football federation denies it was at the president’s request.
