A controversial no-call on an apparent handball in the closing minutes of a Premier League match between Chelsea and West Ham caused quite a stir on social media Saturday.

With the score knotted 1–1 in the 89th minute, Chelsea found a late opportunity as the ball fell to the feet of Conor Gallagher. The Blues midfielder decided to try his luck with a left-footed strike from just outside the box, but the shot was deflected wide by West Ham’s Tomáš Souček and easily collected by the goalkeeper.

However, upon a closer look, the ball clearly glanced off Souček’s left arm, prompting the Chelsea players on the pitch to appeal to referee Craig Pawson for a penalty kick. After a brief VAR check, no penalty was awarded.

The players on the pitch weren’t the only ones visibly frustrated with the no-call. Chelsea’s Twitter account also didn’t hold back any of its criticism about the decision, sharing a rather sarcastic tweet in the closing minutes of the match.

“Soucek makes a great save from Conor Gallagher,” the team wrote.

Chelsea’s gripe with being denied a penalty was ultimately in vain as the match ended in a 1–1 draw. The sole highlight for the Blues was João Félix’s first goal with the club since joining on loan from Atlético Madrid. Former Chelsea player Emerson later equalized for West Ham in the 28th minute.
