XFL’s D.C. Defenders Reveal Fate of Beloved Fan ‘Beer Snake’
Long live the beer snake!
The staple in the stands of home games for the XFL’s D.C. Defenders, created by hundreds of empty beer cups by fans, will still be allowed at Audi Field, the team announced on Saturday.
“For the safety of all fans, the beer snake will be permitted in Sections 136 and 137 contingent on fans following the game day code of conduct,” the team statement read.
There were a series of contingencies for the proclaimed “Beer Snake Code of Conduct” that was announced by the team. Only empty beer cups could be added to the snake. No cups could be thrown from other sections to join the beer snake. Most importantly, the cups could not be thrown on the field of play, as that action would be grounds for ejection from the stadium.
The announcement from the team comes on the heels of the fan outcry stemming from an incident at a Feb. 19 home game against the Seattle Sea Dragons. Security at Audi Field confiscated the beer snake, which led to a rash of fans chucking lemons (presumably from their beers) onto the field of play in protest.
The incident went viral on social media, and led to the team making their announcement ahead of the second home game of the season on Sunday against the St. Louis Battlehawks.
Defenders fans are hoping that there is plenty to cheer about on Sunday afternoon, as they root on the home team with the beer snake once again in tow.
