Virginia point guard Kihei Clark turned the ball over with five seconds to play against Furman on Thursday, throwing an errant pass to avoid a full-court trap that led to a JP Pegues game-winning three with 2.4 seconds to play.

The Paladins stunned the Cavaliers in the first upset of the men’s NCAA tournament, and it wasn’t just college basketball fans who were stunned. The mishap by the usually-reliable Clark even surprised Furman star Jalen Slawson, who was speaking to team staffer in the tunnel after the game.

“He just freaking threw it!” Slawson exclaimed, his reaction saying it all.

The steal and subsequent three with time waning provided basketball fans with the first “March moment” of this tournament, shocking the Virginia fans in attendance.

The No. 13 Paladins now move on to the second round on Saturday to face the winner of No. 5 San Diego State and No. 12 Charleston.
