Shedeur Sanders Explains Why He Avoids Father Deion on Game Days

Playing for his dad has taught the Buffaloes QB some valuable lessons.

Deion Sanders is already transforming the Colorado football program. Among the new talent the Buffaloes’ coach brought to the school is his son, Shedeur, who also played for his father at Jackson State. 

He spoke to reporters on Sunday and opened up about being on his father’s roster, revealing that he tends to avoid the 55-year-old on game days. 

“I mean, from my experience with him, I stay away from him on game day,” Shedeur said of his father. “I don’t ask him nothing, I don’t hang around, I don’t play with him. I just keep my distance from him.

“Like, the first day of anything, and then when it’s game day, it’s exactly the same. He’s gonna snap. So, I just keep my distance from him on those types of big days.”

The father-son tandem had tremendous success at Jackson State, where Shedeur amassed a 23–2 record as the starting quarterback. He threw 70 touchdowns during his tenure with the Tigers while racking up more than 6,900 passing yards.

Shedeur will compete for Colorado’s starting QB job for the 2023 season. The Buffaloes open their campaign on Sept. 2 with a clash against TCU.
