In this story:

Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly was so close to pitching a perfect game Friday at Wrigley Field when disaster struck.

And he can thank his catcher, Yan Gomes, for that.

With no outs in the top of the eighth inning, Dodgers left fielder David Peralta hit a dribbler down the left side of the infield. Smyly quickly went to make a play on the ball but so did Gomes, who ended up running into his pitcher. The two fell to the ground as Peralta made it to first base on what was quickly ruled a hit.

Ouch.
