Bill Cowher Explains Why He Never Took Another NFL Job After Steelers

His answer signifies what being the coach of the Steelers meant to him.

It’s hard to believe that Bill Cowher hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2006. The former Steelers coach walked away at the time with many believing that he was just taking a break from coaching, not retiring for good.

Cowher has been an NFL studio analyst for CBS Sports ever since, and is likely known more for that role than his previous coaching role by the younger generation of football fans.

So why didn’t Cowher ever return to coaching following his resignation in Pittsburgh? It turns out it had everything to do with how he felt about the Steelers.

“I couldn’t come up to the grips of coaching another team,” Cowher said on the Footbahlin podcast with Ben Roethlisberger. “This was like, ‘This was my team.’ So it never really got to the point [of returning to coaching].”

Cowher finished his coaching career with a 140-90-1 record with eight AFC north titles, two AFC titles and a Super Bowl championship with Roethlisberger.

Mike Tomlin took over the Steelers in 2007 and has been the coach ever since, winning one Super Bowl of his own.

Cowher may be long removed from coaching now, but he will always be remembered in Pittsburgh for delivering a Super Bowl and being one of the best coaches in the storied franchise’s history.
