Mets’ Embarrassing Scoreboard Mistake Sums Up Their Entire Season So Far
The 2022 Mets seemed to thrive on doing the little things right through most of their 101-win season, which saw a return to the playoffs for the first time since ’16.
Fast forward one year and the Mets have limped out to a 36–44 record and are well outside of the realistic playoff picture.
Coming off an encouraging 7–2 win over the Brewers on Tuesday and a Wednesday press conference in which team owner Steve Cohen answered for some of the team's 2023 struggles, New York had yet another mistake-filled game, falling to Milwaukee 5–2. The mistakes weren’t limited to just on the field either.
Aside from Buck Showalter’s ejection following a questionable umpire call on a hit-by-pitch, the lasting scene from Wednesday night’s game at Citi Field may be a viral shot of a banner scoreboard, which showed New York’s pitcher as “LASTNAME.”
The pitcher, No. 44 T.J. McFarland, is not a righty either, as the scoreboard indicated. The 34-year-old lefty, who was recently called up by the Mets, was a bright spot for the team in his debut, as he proceeded to down the Brewers in order in the top of the ninth inning.
Hopefully, for McFarland, everyone knows who he is by the next time he steps onto the mound at Citi Field.
