Dan Patrick Clarifies Retirement Announcement, Future of Daily Show
1. Sports radio legend Dan Patrick caused a little bit of a stir last week when he said he would be retiring—in four years. What Patrick didn’t mention at time is that he just signed a four-year contract extension for his daily show, which airs on iHeartMedia stations and Peacock.
The Hollywood Reporter dropped news of Patrick’s new deal Tuesday, and the former SportsCenter anchor amusingly acknowledged that his announcements weren’t done in the proper order.
“I did it backwards, that I announced my retirement then announced my contract extension,” Patrick told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s sort of an Elton John Farewell Tour, where it’s going on for years, and I apologize for that.”
Patrick also told the outlet that when his deal ends he'll be 71 and that seems like a good time to call it a career.
“I just wanted people to know, instead of asking me all the time, ‘What are you going to do? How long are you going to do it?’ And I owed that to the guys that I work with that this was going to be it,” Patrick says. “I’ll be 71. I’m probably the oldest person in this genre doing this. And I just thought, You know what? That’ll be that’ll be a good career and I can call my own shot.”
If Patrick wants to hang it up at 71 because he doesn't want to work anymore and he wants to enjoy free time and life, all the power to him. But he should not retire just because he’s 71 and that may seem old for a radio host.
Patrick is still one of the best interviewers in the game, still gets amazing guests and still has a powerful and needed voice in sports media.
Just Monday, he had ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt on to clarify reports that he’s set to become the new host of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown. (As a bonus, the clip features a nice shout-out from Van Pelt to yours truly.)

3. CBS announced its broadcast teams for the 2023 season. The new crews include:

4. Not only did electrifying Reds rookie Elly De La Cruz hit a 456-foot home run Monday night, but he also had a very smooth bat flip.
5. Bill Belichick had his first press conference of the 2023 season Tuesday, and he was in midseason form, letting everyone know, “It’s football season. Most players play football in football season.”
6. David Beckham seems like a legit Spice Girls fan. The soccer star sang along with wife Victoria Beckham on a karaoke rendition of “Say You’ll Be There,” and he knew all the words.
7. RANDOM VIDEO OF THE DAY: TikTok is by far the best social media app out there right now.
