The Reds’ infield combined for one of the strangest putouts of the season on Monday, with a bullet of a throw from shortstop Elly De La Cruz capping off what was a wild play for the defense.

Mariners’ Ty France hit a ground ball back towards the pitchers mound, which deflected off pitcher Michael Mariot resulting in a difficult play for second baseman Spencer Steer.

After the ball ate up Steer in front of second base, De La Cruz was in perfect position as a backup, and was successfully able to make the play and rifle the ball to first base to beat France by a step.

The ruling on the play was a 1-4-6-3 putout, as the defensive teamwork displayed by Cincinnati helped them record the inning’s first out.

De La Cruz’s incredible arm strength has been on display all season. The 21-year-old has made a bevy of jaw-dropping plays at the shortstop position this season. Monday’s instance was no different, as his strong arm helped secure an out on an extremely difficult play.
