Back In The Day NBA, April 22, 1988: Chicago Bulls' Charles Oakley Grabbed 35 Rebounds In Loss to Cleveland Cavaliers
Charles Oakley was known as "The Enforcer" during his NBA days with the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks.
No day displayed that more than when he had 26 points and a career-high 35 rebounds in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. On this day, Oakley even outshined the great Michael Jordan.
Unfortunately, that was the second-to-last game Oakley played with the Bulls. That summer he was traded to the New York Knicks for Bill Cartwright, allowing the Bulls to draft and develop future All-Star Horace Grant.
Even though the Bulls went on to win three titles in the 1990s with Grant at power forward, Jordan was upset at the time about the trade. Last year he told NBC Sports Chicago how it went down.
"Mike was upset," Oakley said. "I told him, 'Let's just the watch the fight and have a good night.' And that's what we did. I didn't hold no grudge against Jerry (Krause), Jerry Reinsdorf, Michael, nobody. But Michael, it hurt him from the heart. We had just bonded, got real close. But we stayed friends to this day. And he won six championships, and I won zero."'
