Back In The Day NBA, May 17, 1992: Boston Celtics Legend Larry Bird Plays Final Game In Loss To Cleveland Cavs In East Semis

Plagued by back problems, Larry Bird had just 12 points in Game 7 loss to Cleveland Cavaliers

It was reminiscent to watching Muhammad Ali's final fight.

Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird aka "Larry Legend" was only a shell of he once was in a Game 7 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1992 Eastern Conference semifinals.

He finished with just 12 points, signaling a changing of the guard in the East.

"They just outplayed us," said Bird, who missed four of the seven games because of chronic back pain. "They played better offense, better defense, and moved the ball better. We just weren't in the game."

It turned out to be the last game for Bird. He announced his retirement Aug. 18, 1992. It was the first of two tough blows for the Celtics organization. After Bird, the go-player became budding star Reggie Lewis.

Lewis was an All-Star the next season but died on the court while working out the following summer. He was only 27.
