Former Red Sox Third Baseman Thinks Ohtani “Doesn’t Make Sense” in Boston
On the most recent episode of the WAKE and RAKE podcast, Will Middlebrooks argues that Boston is not a World Series contender even if they were to sign Shohei Ohtani.
“I think the Red Sox are out. I don’t think that would make sense for the Red Sox. It’s fun; it would be a great business decision because of everything that he brings to a team as far as selling tickets and merchandise and advertising,” said Middlebrooks. “For the baseball team, it would be fun, and I would love to see him in a Red Sox uniform, but they have way more holes to fill. If they sign Shohei Ohtani, they are not all of a sudden a contender.”
The former player-turned-analyst brings up a couple of great points regarding the team’s level of interest in one of the best baseball players ever. He argues that the Red Sox are still multiple front-line starting pitchers away from competing with the best teams regardless and also brings up the point that there is no guarantee Ohtani will return to form as a pitcher due to a second UCL surgery.
It will be interesting to see where the Japanese superstar decides to take his talents next season. It feels like the answer to the biggest question coming into the offseason is about to be revealed as teams are starting to see their names crossed off the list.
