Coach JB: The NBA Slam Dunk Contest Is Dead

Coach JB says NBA Dunk Contest is dead - JB Show - Alex

On his excellent Bleav podcast, The Coach JB Show, former Independence Pirates junior college football head coach and legendary "Last Chance U" star Jason Brown (the titular Coach JB) didn't mince words in an expletive-laden indictment of the miserable 2024 edition of the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest.

"The NBA dunk contest, the fabric of what the NBA All-Star Game used to be, is gone. And it's probably gone forever," Coach JB lamented. "Gone forever. Seems more to be an accurate statement than 'gone for now.' It seems like it's gone forever. I believe it's done. No stars in the dunk contest... [Boston Celtics shooting guard] Jaylen Brown, if you want to call him a star, I don't know."

Brown, 27, is a three-time All-Star and one-time All-NBA Second Teamer on the best team (by record) in the Eastern Conference.

"They don't give back to the fans," Coach JB added of NBA stars avoiding the competition. "This is the worst performance. And I don't want to hear about Jaylen Brown. I don't want to hear about you coming out and saying that we give props to Jaylen for a star coming out and competing since LeBron never did it. And since no stars are doing it anymore, Jaylen we give you props... You were f***ing horrific. You are the worst dunker we've ever f***ing seen. That's no cap."

Since its peak in the 1980s, the Slam Dunk Contest has slowly faded away during All-Star's Saturday night festivities, as more NBA superstars have flocked to the Three-Point Contest.
