Brian Murphy on Commanders Hiring Kliff Kingsbury, "I Hope it Wasn't All For Caleb Williams"
Kliff Kingsbury is now the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, and his arrival signals his return to the NFL after spending a year as a senior offensive analyst and QB coach for USC.
His arrival with Washington has also drawn many rumors that the team would trade up to draft Caleb Williams. The issue is the Chicago Bears are unlikely to trade their chance of bringing in one of the best college prospects ever.
The Commanders might also be banking on Kingsbury being the way they land Williams, which could be dubious at best. That is exactly what Brian Murphy discusses on the new Bleav in Commanders Podcast episode.
"I hope they didn't get Kliff Kingsbury just for Caleb Williams, you know what I mean? I hope that they think that, you know, should the draft shake out, how it's being projected, even if you go with Drake, maybe even if you go with Jayden Daniels. Caleb Williams goes number one overall that Kliff Kingsbury can still turn that guy into a good quarterback, which I hope that he can, but I hope this wasn't all just for Caleb."

The Commanders should not be banking on the idea of their being able to possibly trade up. The Bears might want far too much to give up the chance to get Williams.
Kingsbury may have been instrumental in guiding Williams this season, but he should be able to do the same with Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.
"Going back to his head coaching days at Texas Tech, he's worked with some pretty big-name quarterbacks. One of them is probably the best in the world. Patrick Mahomes He was with him. Now, I'm not going to say that Kliff Kingsbury made him, but you know, he was his head coach."

Kingsbury does have a good resume to his name, including coaching up QBs like Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray.
Armstrong may be alluding to Kingsbury's resume being enough for the Commanders to want to be bold and trade up for Williams, but again—Kingsbury can do the same with Maye or Daniels.
The Commanders do need a QB, and three solid options are heading into this NFL draft. It will just be up to the Commanders to make the right choice.
