The New England Patriots finally let Mac Jones go, as the QB has now signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He will play backup to Trevor Lawrence, but will be called into action should Lawrence go down.

Jones had an impressive rookie year, throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 TDs, and 13 INTs. He also helped the team make the playoffs, though they lost in the wildcard. Jones has since slumped, and like Bill Belichick, they are both not part of the organization.

Jones might be a viable backup, which could lead to more, especially after he will no longer take the blame for the Patriots' struggles. Former New England WR Chris Hogan explains this on The Patriots Report.

"We are losing every single game and everyone was pointing fingers at our quarterback. And, you know, that's a tough spot to be in. And this year he doesn't have the fingers. Right. The fingers are pointed at another guy and the expectations are on another guy. There's no expectations for you anymore, which is a good and bad thing, right? It's a bad thing because you're not in that position to be the starter or the expectations are on you to be successful and win that spot. No one's expecting you to go down there and do that. But it's a good thing because you can just go out there and have fun."

Jones was at the brunt end of the blame for the Patriots' struggles the last two seasons, leading to Belichick using an odd two-QB system with Jones and Bailey Zappe that did not work.

Now, Jones can get back to honing his craft as a backup to Lawrence. He may not be able to start for the team, but he could see action in some small ways.
