Eric Metcalf Diagnoses Biggest Offseason Need For The Cleveland Browns
On the latest installment of Bleav's Cleveland Browns podcast The Dawg Check With Eric Metcalf and Max Loeb, the latter co-host asked the three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro running back and wide receiver if he believed the club's biggest addition to seek out this offseason was indeed a second edge rusher, to pair with superstar Myles Garrett.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Metcalf was all-in on shoring up his old team's defense behind Garrett.
"I do [believe Cleveland needs to prioritize adding another edge rusher], because, talking about Myles, he was Defensive Player of the Year, but his sack [tally] was down from other guys who could have possibly won this award and that," Metcalf responded. "So if you don't have that other guy, it might be even more because then you're able to double team him more, you're able to let running backs and tight ends chip on him more."
"So now, depending on how offense is calling plays, do you double team or chip Myles Garrett, or do you do it to the other guy on the other side just based on how you want to actually run a play? So that's why you've got to have another guy who is comparable to Myles Garrett."
After losing starting quarterback DeShaun Watson to a season-ending injury, the Browns' season had been left for dead. But after Cleveland added former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco off the scrap heap, the team finished strong, going 11-6 and earning a Wild Card berth. That's as far as the Browns got this year. Maybe will a bit more defensive help, things will change for the better next season, regardless of who's under center.
