Chris Chelios Unpacks Fellow Former Blackhawk Patrick Kane's Return To Chicago
Four-time All-Star and three-time Stanley Cup championship-winning right wing Patrick Kane, now with the Detroit Redwings, made an emotional return to square off against the team with which he won those three titles, the Chicago Blackhawks, on February 25th.
Detroit won, 3-2, in overtime. Kane chipped in two points, including the game-winning goal.
With Kane in attendance, another Blackhawks legend, Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios, saw his jersey retired during the bout, and spoke on Bleav's Snipes and Stripes Podcast with co-hosts Jeremy Roenick, another star Blackhawk, and Tim Peel, a former NHL referee, about Kane.
"You gave a shout out to Patrick Kane and and you could tell that meant a lot to him," Peel said. "Even though the Blackhawks didn't win... you couldn't have written a better script [for] a guy you give a shout out to and who will have his jersey in the rafters, like you said. [Kane] scores the overtime winner... you can't even make that up. It was unbelievable."
"No, it was perfect," Chelios concurred. "I think... Kaner obviously stole my thunder and maybe [Chicago native] Cindy Crawford when she shot that shot from center ice. It was crazy. But anyway, Kaner, like I said, we had spoken obviously during the summer and after the surgery and he was asking me about Detroit and what I thought and, you know, obviously I was all in with Detroit. The ownership Steve Yzerman with Larkin. And to break it, it was just the perfect situation for him. And I'm sure glad he listened because it looks like he's going to get that team to hopefully get in the playoffs this year. And he's just going to keep going. And he's such a great kid and there's no question he will go down... great is great to me, but he'll be the best ever as far as Americans. And he's still going strong."
Indeed he is, at the ripe old age of 35!
