7 Gopher student-athletes test positive for COVID-19
Seven student-athletes at the University of Minnesota have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a press release.
The seven athletes are not identified, though the release notes that they come from a range of different sports. The positive results come after 170 tests were conducted, with all athletes with confirmed cases self-isolating themselves.
They will need to be cleared by medical professionals before they are allowed to return to team activities. To be given the go-ahead to return, each athlete will need to test negative twice and will be required to go through daily health screenings.
“During this time, they will have access to all necessary resources and food and will be in daily communication with members of Minnesota’s athletic medicine staff,” the release says.
The U of M started diagnostic testing athletes upon their return to campus this month.
With the 2020-21 college sports season just a couple of months away, more and more student-athletes at high-profile universities around the country testing positive. Thirty-seven football players are among 43 athletes with confirmed cases at Clemson, while 17 athletes have tested positive at the University of Iowa.
