Gopher football earns highest ranking in AP poll since 2004
The Minnesota Golden Gopher football team continues to keep winning and as a result, they keep moving up in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. With the latest installment being announced on Sunday, the Gophers moved up from 20th to 17th, marking their highest ranking in the poll since the 2004 season.
The Gophers' ascent has been a remarkable one so far even as they had a rocky start against South Dakota State, Fresno State and Georgia Southern to open the year, but still came away with wins.
Since then, Minnesota has ran through their Big Ten schedule and with a 42-7 victory over Rutgers on Saturday, the Gophers were off to their best start since 1960.
Their nine-game winning streak, which dates back to their win against Wisconsin last season, is also tied for the fourth-longest in the country and has them atop the Big Ten West division.
Some may question the validity of the Gophers' start considering they have yet to play a ranked team, but that will change in the next few weeks.
With the Gophers' next game coming against Maryland next Saturday, Minnesota will have a bye week before a big showdown against No. 6 Penn State, who defeated No. 19 Michigan on Saturday.
From there, the Gophers will travel to Northwestern and No. 20 Iowa before wrapping up their season attempting to defend Paul Bunyan's Axe on November 30 against No. 13 Wisconsin.
