Gopher women's hockey team tops Cornell to reach national championship game
The Golden Gopher women's hockey team topped Cornell 2-0 Friday afternoon, bringing them one win from their fifth national championship since 2008-09.
Nicole Schammel scored the game-winning goal and Alex Gulstene made 15 saves in the shutout victory, which puts Minnesota in Sunday's title game against arch rival Wisconsin.
The championship bout begins at 1:30 p.m. in Hamden, Connecticut, and will be televised on Big Ten Network.
"We're thrilled and so happy to be getting back to the national championship game," head coach Brad Frost said, via GopherSports.com. "Anytime you can be playing on the last day of the season, it's a special moment and a special opportunity. Our kids battled here today. We're a pretty high-scoring team and not really known as much for defending really, really well, but that's exactly what our team did today."
