The Gophers are going to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego

They'll play Washington State.

The Gophers are headed to San Diego.

Following an 8-4 regular season, the University of Minnesota football team has accepted an invitation to the 2016 National Funding Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27, in San Diego, the team announced in a news release.

They'll face Washington State, which finished the season 8-4 and came in second in the Pac-12 North Division. The Gophers have played Washington State five times and are 2-3 against the Cougars, but the teams have not matched up since 1988, the release said.

It will be the first time that Minnesota will play in the bowl and the team’s fifth straight bowl game – tied for the longest consecutive streak in program history, according to the release.

The Gophers were the fourth-highest scoring team in the Big Ten this season, with an average of 30.3 points per game.
