Minnesota sports fans have been spoiled so far this summer.

The Twins have confounded expectations by becoming a bomba-bashing team of (should have been) All-Stars, and now their free-scoring ways are being replicated by Minnesota United.

Flash back to May 29, the Loons were on the receiving end of a 3-0 lashing by Atlanta United and had scored just 4 goals in 8 games (one of them a friendly).

Since then? They've been nigh-on unstoppable, smashing 28 goals in just 8 games and are now on a 7-game winning streak.

The prolific run has coincided with the team reaching the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, which was confirmed on Wednesday night with an emphatic 6-1 victory over New Mexico United, a side from the USL, a division II league.

The run has also sent them to the heady heights of 4th in the MLS Western Conference, putting them well in contention for their first ever playoffs appearance at their third attempt.

On Wednesday, New Mexico United threatened an upset by taking the head in the 7th minute, only for the door to be firmly closed on them thanks to four goals in a spectacular 13-minute burst.

Angelo Rodriguez came away with a hat-trick, with Darwin Quintero – obviously – Jan Gregus and Miguel Ibarra completing the rout.

The Loons will be hoping to keep the good times rolling this weekend when they welcome Dallas FC to Allianz Field, with Dallas just a point behind.
