Class AA quarterfinals: Day 2 of the MN boys' hockey tournament
Day 2 of the boys' hockey tournament in Minnesota features the Class AA quarterfinals. Here's what's happened so far and what's yet to come.
Cretin-Derham Hall 3, Maple Grove 1
The unseeded Raiders pulled the upset by knocking off No. 2 Maple Grove with a dominant effort in goal by junior goalie Leo Miller, who stopped 20 of 21 shots and was a perfect 14 of 14 in the final two periods.
CDH scored in the first, second and third periods, with the honors going to Chuck Owens, Holden Saumweber and Max Anderson.
Edina 7, Moorhead 6 in double overtime
Moorhead trailed 5-2 and 6-3 before erupting for three goals in the final 11 minutes of the third period to force overtime, though the Hornets survived the Spuds' upset bid on a game-winning goal by at 2:02 of the second overtime by Charlie Sandven.
Bobby Cowan led Edina with a hat trick and two assists for a five-point game.
Edina will play Cretin-Derham Hall in the semifinals on Friday.
Minnetonka 4, Hill-Murray 3 in overtime
A thriller in the third game of the day as Hill-Murray came within a minute of upsetting the No. 1 team in the tournament. But it wasn't to be as Hagen Burrows scored with just over a minute to go in the third period and the Skippers having pulled their goalie to tie the game 3-3.
In overtime, Minnetonka won on John Stout's goal at 7:29 of the extra period.
Hill-Murray had taken a 3-2 lead on Landon Cottingham's second goal of the game early in the third period.
Minnetonka out-shot the Pioneers 44-15 but Hill-Murray stayed in the game and nearly won thanks to senior goalie Jack Erickson's 40-save performance.
Andover 5, Lakeville South 2
Three second-period goals in a span of 5 minutes, 15 seconds fueled The fourth-seeded Huskies into the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Minnetonka on Friday night.
Will Kortan's goal 56 seconds into the third period but Lakeville South's deficit to one at 3-2, but Andover went up 4-2 on a goal by Brooks Cogswell and then put a bow on the victory when Gavyn Thoreson completed his hat trick.
