Minnesota sports broadcaster Marney Gellner breast cancer-free after surgery
Beloved Minnesota sports broadcaster Marney Gellner says she is cancer-free after undergoing surgery.
Gellner announced in March that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would have to undergo a lumpectomy. However, she revealed in an update Monday evening that she ended up having a single mastectomy, but now requires no further treatment.
"2 weeks ago today, I had a single mastectomy. Definitely not part of the original plan, but sometimes the plan changes and you gotta pivot like Ross Geller," she tweeted.
"I finally got clear margins and I am now breast cancer free! No further treatment needed."
The Bally Sports North host continued to encourage women, particularly those over the age of 40, to get regular mammograms, saying: "Let’s forever give a hoot about our hoots!"
"It’s been an absolute roller coaster of emotions, but I remain extremely thankful and grateful that this was found so early. What a blessing! Early detection is SO IMPORTANT!" she added.
Gellner, 49, has spent her career in Minnesota covering the Twins, Timberwolves, Wild and Lynx as a jack of all trades sportscaster, serving as studio host, play-by-play announcer and sideline/field reporter.
She made history in March 2019 when she became the first woman to do play-by-play for a Minnesota Twins broadcast, calling games for Fox Sports North and WCCO Radio three days in a row. She went viral with her spring training home run calls, using a catchphrase "better call mama" after Twins players hit home runs.
In December 2018 she became the second woman ever to serve as the lead television play-by-play announcer of an NBA game, doing so for a Timberwolves game.
