It's been nearly a year since the Timberwolves played a regular season game, but barring any last-minute COVID-related disruption they will be back on the court for the 2020-21 regular season opener Dec. 23 against the Detroit Pistons.

The season opener will be played in Minneapolis at Target Center, with the game starting that Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Wolves then head west for a three-game road trip against Western Conference powers Utah, the Lakers and Clippers.

This season comes with renewed hope as Karl-Anthony Towns' wrist is believed to healthy, Ricky Rubio is back, Anthony Edwards joins the squad after being selected No. 1 overall in November's NBA Draft, and D'Angelo Russell returns to for his first full season in Minnesota.

Throw in potential development by the previous two first-round picks, Josh Okogie and Jarrett Culver, and the Wolves are sitting on a boatload of talent that has yet to showcase how good they can be together.

Other noteworthy games on the first half of the schedule:

– Jan. 1: Home vs. Russell Westbrook, Bradley Beal and the Wizards

– Jan. 9-10: Back-to-back home games against San Antonio, which could feature rookie guard Tyrell Terry, who starred at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis.

– Jan. 13, 15: Two straight at home against Tyus Jones and the Grizzlies.

– Jan. 23: Zion Williamson and the Pelicans visit Target Center.

– Jan. 25, 27: Two straight on the road against the Warriors (and Andrew Wiggins).

– Jan. 29: Rivalry between Towns and Joel Embiid renews as Philly comes to Minnesota.

– Feb. 16: LeBron and the NBA champion Lakers visit Minneapolis.
