Carlos Correa homered and had the go-ahead two-run double to lead the Minnesota Twins (10-4) over the New York Yankees (8-6) 4-3 Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

The game didn't start great for the Twins as Louie Varland, the young right-hander from St. Paul who was called up from Triple-A to start in place of Kenta Maeda, allowed a leadoff homer to Anthony Volpe and then two pitches later Aaron Judge took him deep for a quick 2-0 Yankees lead.

But Varland settled down and Minnesota fought back with with a solo homer by Correa in the sixth inning to make it a 2-1 game.

Giancarlo Stanton ripped a homer off Varland in the bottom of the sixth to give New York a 3-1 lead, but Kyle Garlick's solo homer off Nester Cortes again cut the Yankee lead to one at 3-2.

Then in the eighth inning, Michael A. Taylor, who homered twice in Thursday's game, led off with a soft liner for a single to right field, followed by a Byron Buxton walk to put two the go-ahead run at first base with Correa at the plate and the superstar shortstop delivered with a sharp double down the right field line for a 4-3 Twins lead.

Varland pitched six innings and allowed three runs while striking out eight. Jhoan Duran allowed a leadoff single in the ninth before inducing a double-play grounder and then got Willie Calhoun to pop out to end the game.

This is the fastest Minnesota has reached 10 wins since the 2020 COVID-shortened season when they started 10-2. The last time they started a season 10-4 in a non-COVID year was 2010 when they also won 10 of 14 games to begin the season.
