The 96.7 mph fastball that hit Byron Buxton in his ribs last Thursday has sent him to the injured list for the first time this season.

The Twins outfielder who has been relegated to designated hitter in all 50 of his games this season – in an effort to keep him healthy – was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday.

Rib contusion is the official injury diagnosis and his placement on the injured list is retroactive to June 3, meaning he's eligible to return to the lineup June 13.

Trevor Larnach was recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to take Buxton's spot on the roster.

Buxton has missed 10 games due to scheduled off days and some extra time to rest a sore knee. For the season, he's slashing .220/.325/.445 with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs.

The Twins open a three-game series at Tampa Bay on Tuesday. First pitch is at 5:40 p.m.
